The Strongest Smelling Salts, According to the Lifters Who Use Them
The strongest smelling salts by lifter consensus are Jujimufu's AHHH!!! — the near-unanimous pick across r/Strongman threads from 2023 to 2025 — followed by Zone's hotter varieties and Atomic Rhino. Below: what the lifters actually say, verbatim, plus the inconvenient science about what “stronger” buys you (arousal, not strength).
Which smelling salts hit the hardest?
AHHH!!! by Jujimufu
$25
Marketed as the world's strongest, and r/Strongman largely agrees. So intense the official instructions say hold the bottle at least 1 foot (30 cm) from your nose and let the vapors come to you — never sniff it directly. Featured on the Joe Rogan podcast.
Zone Smelling Salts
$14.99 (Original)
User-activated format: you add a capful of water to dry ammonium carbonate powder to release the gas. A full strength ladder from Original (“stronger than most beginner salts” per Zone's own label) to the hotter Bear Down and Blood varieties. Shelf life ~6 months.
Atomic Rhino
~$15
A frequent “hits harder than the big names” mention in lifter threads. Note: its maker (Scitus) is one of the seven companies that received FDA warning letters in 2024 over alertness marketing claims.
We don't sell or earn from any ammonia product. Regulatory context: in August 2024 the FDA warned consumers against alertness-marketed ammonia inhalants as a category, and sent warning letters to seven makers. The full safety review is here.
What do lifters say about them?
Verbatim from public Reddit threads, lightly trimmed, attributed as posted. These are individual opinions, not typical results or our claims.
“Ahhh by Juji is the strongest by far”
“I've tried my fair share of smelling salts. Zone has some really good ones. I thought I've experienced some really strong salts... that was until I tried Ahhhhh! from Juji. That stuff would wake up a corpse at a funeral.”
“If there's anything stronger than a fresh bottle of AHHHH!!!!! from Juji then it's truly overkill, that shit will rattle you down to your diaphragm”
“I mean, if it helps you it helps you, but smelling salts are placebo... The only reason anyone would need stronger smelling salts is if their nose is blown out already.”
“Honestly, smelling salts are just an extra thing in the routine of getting ready for a lift. If you never do it, you'll never need it... it's just another thing you'll use as an excuse if you ever don't have it and miss a big lift.”
“Most high level athletes I train with don't use salts before bench. It's a lift with a high technical component, which lends itself to being in a calm state of mind. Squat & deadlift (especially conventional) on the other hand...”
Does stronger actually lift more?
The honest answer that nobody selling “the world's strongest” wants on the label: controlled research keeps finding no strength gain. A 2024 systematic review in Sports Health found ergogenic benefit only in repeated high-intensity bouts (Wingate anaerobic tests) — and no performance benefit in a short burst of maximal effort, despite elevated arousal and a perception of performing better. A deadlift 1RM study found no difference; a 2014 squat/bench study measured P=0.403 and P=0.422 against placebo.
What intensity does change is the jolt: heart rate up, sharp inhale, instant alertness for 15–60 seconds. A survey of Australian powerlifters found most use concentrated on the deadlift — the meet's final grind, where arousal helps most and technique suffers least. That's also why the Canadian Strength and Conditioning Association's practical advice is to save them for critical attempts instead of making them a daily crutch that replaces your own ability to get focused.

Disclosure: we sell a Thai menthol-camphor herbal inhaler — the gentle daily-use cousin, not an ammonia product. If your real goal is a between-sets reset you can use every session, the ammonia vs menthol comparison is the honest place to start.
Strongest smelling salts FAQ
What are the strongest smelling salts?
By lifter consensus across r/Strongman threads from 2023 through 2025, Jujimufu's AHHH!!! is the strongest widely sold smelling salt — strong enough that its own instructions require holding the bottle a foot from your nose. Zone's hotter varieties and Atomic Rhino are the usual runners-up.
Do stronger smelling salts work better?
No, by the available evidence. Controlled studies find no strength gain from ammonia inhalants at any intensity — a 2024 systematic review found benefits only in repeated high-intensity bouts (Wingate tests), never in single max lifts. Stronger salts produce a bigger jolt and a bigger flinch, not a bigger deadlift. Even lifters in the threads say the chase for stronger salts usually means your nose has adapted.
Why do powerlifters use smelling salts before deadlifts specifically?
A survey of Australian powerlifters found most ammonia use happens during the deadlift event — the last, most grind-it-out lift of a meet, where arousal helps and fine technique matters less. Lifters in r/powerlifting report avoiding salts before bench because it's too technical for an adrenaline spike.
Are smelling salts allowed in powerlifting competitions?
Yes. Ammonia is not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the International Powerlifting Federation permits inhaling ammonia as long as it's done out of public view (per Poison Control's review of the rules).
How do you use strong smelling salts safely?
Waft, never sniff: open away from your face, start at arm's length, and let the vapor reach you. Jujimufu's own FAQ says AHHH must be kept at least 30 cm away. Cap the bottle immediately (potency fades), use rarely, and skip them entirely if you felt lightheaded — the FDA's 2024 warning documented fainting and shortness of breath from ammonia inhalant use.
Is there something strong that isn't ammonia?
The menthol route: Thai herbal inhalers deliver a sharp, eye-widening menthol-camphor hit with no ammonia reflex and no one-foot safety radius — the daily-use tool next to ammonia's rare-jolt tool. Disclosure: we sell one, so take the comparison with that in mind.
